-Breeding For Quality-

Diet

The basic chinchilla diet consists of chinchilla pellets and hay. There are quite a few brands of chinchilla pellets available at pet and feed stores. We used to use Mazuri brand, however not all of our chinnies took to it, so now we feed them a 50/50 mix  of Tradition Chinchilla Pellets and Purina Advanced Nutrtion Show Rabbit, they just love this mix and do very very well on it.  We also use our own supplement (oat mix) as well. Chinchillas should be fed in the evening at the same time each day.

Adults consume approximately one to two tablespoons of pellets per day. Because they are nocturnal, it is best to feed them in the evening. Uneaten pellets should always be removed before new pellets are given. If there seems to be excess waste, lessen the amount of pellets given as necessary. Likewise, if all pellets are eaten, increase the amount. .

Chinchillas younger than three months of age should be fed both in the morning and in the evening, approximately one tablespoon at each feeding. (The stress of weaning, among other factors, in some cases has been known to cause overeating - which may be fatal). Keep feed in an airtight, rodent-proof container in order to keep it fresh and uncontaminated. Chinchilla pellets begin to lose their nutritional value after about three months, discard any feed older than this.

Hay is an extremely important part of your chinchilla's diet. Either loose timothy or alfalfa may be offered (if your chin has a weight problem, consider feeding timothy, as alfalfa is higher in fat and protein). However other hays such as Coastal Bermuda, Orchard Grass, Blue Grass, etc .. can also be offered.  In either case, be sure that the hay is free of dust, mold and weeds. As an alternative, pressed alfalfa cubes may also be fed. Hay can be purchased at your local pet store or feed store, or you can go online to order your hay/pellets and other supplements (we offer chin supplies).

Chinchillas love their treats, but only feed in moderation as many health problems may result from excess. Also, since chinchillas have such sensitive digestive systems. A 1/2 - 1 teaspoon of rolled oats/supplement may be offered daily. Raisins, Craisins, Plain Mini-Shredded Wheat may also be offered several times per week, but no more than one per day. An occasional small slice of apple is also acceptable, but not on a daily basis, as diarrhea may result. Some chinchillas also enjoy other dried fruits and vegetables, but these too must only be offered in moderation. If you choose to feed your chins dried fruits or vegetables, PLEASE do your research to know what is safe.

If you feed your chinchillas a supplement, it is best not to give them daily treats, as this can become to rich for the stomach's. You can however offer them a treat a few times a week.
